Channel Catfish in the Rogue River? Absolutely. While not as widely targeted as salmon or trout, the Rogue offers a surprisingly good channel catfish fishery, particularly in the slower, warmer sections of the river and in the impoundments such as Lost Creek Lake. Focus your efforts in areas with muddy or silty bottoms, submerged logs, and other structure. Summer evenings and nights are the most productive times, as catfish are nocturnal feeders. Use traditional catfish baits such as chicken liver, nightcrawlers, or commercially prepared stink baits. Fishing near the bottom is key. The area around Grants Pass and the backwaters below the dam can be particularly productive. Access to these catfish hotspots is available through public boat ramps and shoreline access. Be prepared for some larger fish, as the Rogue can produce some impressive channel cats. A sturdy rod and reel are recommended.
