What makes the Rogue special is its blend of classic river structure – riffles, runs, and deep pools – combined with warmer water temperatures than many other Pacific Northwest rivers, creating ideal habitat for smallies. The best time to target them is typically late spring through early fall, after the spring salmon runs have subsided and the water has warmed up. Focus your efforts around Grants Pass and downstream towards the Applegate River confluence. Access is plentiful via numerous parks and boat ramps along Highway 99. Be aware that the Rogue can get crowded with rafters and other river users during the summer, so early morning or late afternoon fishing is recommended.
