Channel Catfish

Channel catfish are a readily available target near El Lago, thanks to the network of bayous and waterways that feed into Clear Lake. While Clear Lake itself is brackish, the upstream freshwater sections of these bayous offer good channel catfishing. Look for areas with structure, such as fallen trees, submerged brush, and deeper holes. Stink baits, cut bait, and nightcrawlers are all effective choices. Fishing near docks and piers can also be productive, especially at night. Summer is a particularly good time to target channel cats, as they are more active in warmer water. A simple slip-sinker rig is often all you need. A good access point is the Armand Bayou Nature Center, where you can fish from the bank or launch a kayak to explore the bayou. Just be mindful of the tides, as they can influence the water levels and current.
