Cobia

Chasing Cobia around Port O'Connor, Texas, is an exciting game of sight fishing and opportunistic encounters. These powerful fish migrate along the Texas coast, and POC's proximity to the Gulf makes it a prime location to intercept them. Spring and early summer are peak season, as Cobia follow baitfish migrations. Look for them around buoys, channel markers, and floating debris. Live eels, crabs, or large shrimp are irresistible offerings. Keep an eye out for them sunning themselves near the surface. A key local tip is to check the nearshore oil rigs and platforms; Cobia often congregate around these structures. When targeting Cobia, be prepared for a strong fight; use a heavy spinning or conventional setup with at least 50-pound braid. Also, be aware that Cobia are known to follow hooked fish, so keep a second rod rigged and ready. Be sure to check the TPWD regulations for size and bag limits before heading out.
