If you're heading to York, Maine with cod in mind, timing is everything. The Gulf of Maine sees the best cod action during the colder months, typically late fall through early spring. These fish move closer to shore in search of forage fish like herring and mackerel, which also concentrate nearshore at this time. Focus your efforts around rocky outcroppings and ledges, especially those holding structure in 60-120 feet of water. Natural baits like clams, crabs, or cut mackerel work wonders here.
