While not as abundant as they once were, cod fishing off Boothbay Harbor can still provide a rewarding experience. Focus your efforts on deeper offshore waters, particularly around rocky bottom structure and wrecks. These areas provide habitat and attract the baitfish that cod feed on. Winter is often considered prime time for cod fishing, but you can find them year-round. Using heavy jigs or bait rigs with clams or herring is a common technique. Be prepared for challenging conditions, as the weather in this area can be unpredictable. A good starting point is Jeffrey's Ledge, but be sure to check the regulations regarding groundfish closures before heading out. Remember to use circle hooks to minimize injury to the fish, especially if you plan to release them. Keep an eye on your depth finder, as cod often hold tight to the bottom.
