Cod

While not as prolific as in the past, cod fishing is still possible out of York Harbor, though you'll need to venture further offshore. The best bet is to target the deeper water and rocky bottom structure several miles out, where cod tend to congregate. Winter is traditionally the prime time, but some fish can be caught year-round. Jigs tipped with clams or other bait are effective, as are bait rigs fished near the bottom. Be prepared for potentially rough seas and cold conditions during the winter months. Cod stocks are carefully managed, so be sure to check the current regulations regarding size and bag limits before heading out. Access to offshore waters requires a seaworthy vessel, and the town boat ramp provides a convenient launching point.
