Crappie

Maumelle, Arkansas, offers some excellent crappie fishing opportunities, primarily in the backwaters and sloughs connected to the Arkansas River. These areas provide the calm, shallow water that crappie prefer, especially during the spawning season in the spring. Anglers should also explore Lake Maumelle; though known for its clear water, crappie can be found around submerged structure and brush piles. Early spring, just before the spawn, and again in the fall as the water cools are the most productive times. A local trick is to use small jigs tipped with minnows or crappie nibbles, and fish them vertically around submerged timber or brush piles. The area near the Palarm Creek inlet can be particularly productive. Remember, crappie tend to school, so if you catch one, stick around and you're likely to find more.
