Crappie

Crappie fishing near Parker Dam can be surprisingly productive, especially in the backwaters and sloughs of the Colorado River. While not as widely known as some other fisheries in California, the area offers a decent crappie population. Look for them around submerged brush, docks, and other structure in the shallower, more sheltered areas. Spring is prime time for crappie, as they move into these areas to spawn. A local trick is to use live minnows suspended under a bobber near structure. Another good option is small jigs. The water clarity can vary depending on the river flow, so adjust your lure color accordingly. Also, be aware of the boat traffic, especially on weekends, and find a quiet cove to fish without disturbance. Consider launching from one of the smaller boat ramps further upriver to avoid the crowds and find less-pressured crappie haunts.
