Crappie

Shasta Lake offers a surprisingly good Crappie fishery, though it often flies under the radar. The key to success here is understanding seasonal movements. Spring is undoubtedly the best time, as Crappie move into the shallows to spawn. Focus on submerged brush, docks, and standing timber in the coves of the McCloud River and Pit River arms. Small jigs and minnows suspended under a bobber are deadly. As the water warms in the summer, Crappie will move deeper, often suspending around submerged structure. Use your electronics to locate them and adjust your depth accordingly. A local secret: night fishing under lights can be incredibly productive during the summer months. Be sure to check lake levels before you go, as access to some areas can be affected by low water.
