Walleye in California? Absolutely! Shasta Lake is one of the few places in the state where you can target these delicious fish. While not as abundant as other species, Shasta Lake offers a unique opportunity for walleye anglers. Spring and fall are the best times to target walleye, as they move into shallower water to spawn and feed. Focus on rocky points and submerged structure in the Sacramento River arm. Jigs tipped with nightcrawlers or minnows are highly effective. As the water warms up in the summer, walleye move deeper, often suspending near the thermocline. Trolling crankbaits at depths of 20-30 feet can be productive during this time. The key to success is understanding the baitfish patterns and targeting areas where they congregate. Be prepared to cover a lot of water, as walleye can be scattered. Local tip: check the water clarity, as walleye prefer slightly stained water. The Antlers Bridge area is known to hold walleye, especially during the spring spawn.
