For slab-sized crappie, Lake Okeechobee is a fantastic destination, particularly during the cooler months. As the water temperature drops from late fall through early spring, crappie congregate in large numbers near structure, making them easier to target. Fish around submerged vegetation, docks, and bridge pilings. Jigs tipped with minnows are a classic and highly effective presentation. Vary your jig color and retrieve until you find what the fish are keying on. A local tip is to use a long pole to reach crappie holding tight to cover. The canals around Okeechobee can also be productive. Remember to check the daily bag limits, which can vary depending on the time of year. Early mornings and late afternoons are often the most productive times for crappie fishing.
