Crappie

If you're chasing crappie in southwest Georgia, Shellman offers some fantastic opportunities. The Chattahoochee River and its associated backwaters and oxbow lakes are prime crappie habitat. These areas provide the shallow, structure-rich environments that crappie love. Spring is undoubtedly the best time to target them, as they move into the shallows to spawn. Focus on submerged brush, fallen trees, and lily pads in 2-6 feet of water. Minnows and jigs under a bobber are classic and effective presentations. Another great time is the fall, as the fish move into the creeks and rivers following baitfish. A local tip: check water levels before you go, as the river can fluctuate, impacting access and fishing conditions. The fish here tend to be good-sized, with some slabs exceeding two pounds not uncommon. Public access is available at several boat ramps along the river, but be aware of the potential for strong currents, especially after heavy rains.
