Crappie

Cedar Vale offers some under-the-radar crappie fishing, particularly in the spring. While there aren't any massive reservoirs nearby, the smaller lakes and ponds in the area can hold some surprisingly good slabs. Focus your attention on submerged structure like brush piles, fallen trees, and weed edges. Spring, from late March through April, is prime time as the crappie move shallow to spawn. Minnows under a bobber are a classic presentation, but small jigs in white, chartreuse, or pink can also be deadly. A local tip: many of the crappie in this area are relatively shallow, even in deeper water. Try suspending your bait just a few feet below the surface. Be mindful of water clarity – if it's murky, opt for brighter colored jigs. Remember to check local regulations regarding creel limits and size restrictions before heading out.
