Crappie

Crappie enthusiasts will find some decent opportunities in the waters surrounding Manchester, Kentucky. While not known for trophy crappie, the smaller lakes and backwaters of the Red Bird River hold populations of these tasty panfish. Spring is undoubtedly the best time to target crappie, as they move into shallow water to spawn. Look for them around submerged brush piles, fallen trees, and other structure in water depths of 4-8 feet. Small minnows suspended under a bobber are a classic and reliable presentation. Alternatively, try using small jigs in white, chartreuse, or pink. A local tip is to focus on areas near creek mouths or where the river widens into small pools. Be aware that water clarity can fluctuate, so adjust your lure color accordingly. The crappie here are often schooling fish, so if you catch one, there are likely more nearby.
