Crappie enthusiasts looking for a productive Kentucky destination should consider New Castle. While not as widely known as some of the larger lakes, the smaller bodies of water and backwater areas around New Castle offer surprisingly good crappie fishing. Spring is undoubtedly the best time, as crappie move into shallower water to spawn. Look for brush piles, submerged timber, and weed beds in coves and along the edges of the main channels. Minnows and small jigs are the go-to baits. A local's secret is to fish around the docks and piers on private property – if you can get permission, you might find some honey holes. Be mindful of water clarity, as the creeks can get muddy after heavy rains. Fish tend to congregate in the clearest water available. The crappie here may not be giants, but they are plentiful and offer a great day of fishing.
