These waters often feature shallow, weedy bays and submerged timber, perfect crappie habitat. Spring is prime time, as the crappie move into these shallows to spawn. Look for water temperatures in the 60-65 degree range. Early morning and late evening can be particularly productive. A local tip: Many of these lakes have limited boat access, so a smaller boat or even a kayak can be advantageous. Also, pay attention to water clarity. On clearer lakes, crappie tend to hold tighter to cover, while in stained water, they'll roam a bit more. The crappie in this region tend to run on the smaller side, but what they lack in size, they make up for in numbers. A light action rod and small jigs are your best bet.
