Crappie enthusiasts, Bovey, Minnesota, is calling your name! The area's many lakes, often stained with tannins, offer ideal habitat for slab-sized crappies. Look to waters like Swan Lake and other smaller, weedy lakes in the area. These fish love structure, so focus your efforts around submerged trees, docks, and weed lines. Spring is peak crappie season, as they move into the shallows to spawn. Use small jigs tipped with minnows or plastics under a bobber. Summer crappie fishing can be good in deeper water near structure. Fall can also be productive as crappies school up before winter. A great local tip is to use your electronics to find submerged wood piles. These are crappie magnets! Many of the lakes around Bovey have good public access, but some are smaller and best suited for smaller boats or canoes. Be mindful of the slot limits on some lakes to ensure the sustainability of the fishery.
