Brown Trout

While not as renowned as some other areas in the state, Bovey, Minnesota, offers surprisingly good brown trout fishing in several of its smaller rivers and streams. The Sand River, for example, is a local favorite. These are typically stream-resident browns, so you're not going to find trophy-sized fish, but the challenge and the beauty of the surroundings make it a worthwhile pursuit. Spring (after ice-out) and fall are the prime times to target browns. During these periods, the fish are more active and less affected by the heat of summer. Fly fishing is the preferred method, with dry flies and nymphs being particularly effective. Be prepared to wade; access can be tricky in some areas, and the water can be cold, even in summer. Check the DNR regulations for specific stream closures and restrictions. Remember to practice catch and release to help sustain the fishery.
