Crappie

If you're chasing crappie in the Breezy Point area, you're in for a treat. The numerous lakes surrounding Breezy Point, including Pelican Lake and the Whitefish Chain of Lakes, offer excellent crappie habitat. These lakes are known for their healthy weed beds, submerged timber, and varying depths, all of which contribute to a thriving crappie population. Spring is prime time, as crappies move into shallow bays and channels to spawn. Look for them near docks, reeds, and any structure that provides cover. A small jig tipped with a minnow or plastic is deadly. As the water warms in summer, crappies tend to move deeper, suspending near thermoclines. Try trolling small crankbaits or using a slip bobber to target these deeper fish. A local tip: Pelican Lake can get busy, so consider exploring some of the smaller, less-known lakes in the area for more solitude and potentially larger crappies. Be sure to check the current Minnesota DNR regulations for size and bag limits.
