Crappie

Crappie fishing around Redings Mill offers a chance to fill your cooler in the region's many creeks, rivers, and small lakes. Spring is undoubtedly the best time, as crappie move into shallow water to spawn. Look for them around brush piles, submerged timber, and docks in the backs of coves. A simple jig and bobber setup is highly effective, but minnows can also be deadly. A local's trick: try fishing near the Highway 43 bridge where it crosses Center Creek; the bridge pilings often hold good numbers of crappie. Be mindful of water levels, as heavy rains can muddy the water and push the crappie deeper. The crappie in this area tend to run a bit smaller than in some of the larger reservoirs, but what they lack in size, they make up for in numbers.
