Crappie

If you're looking for slab crappie in Nebraska, Broken Bow is a great starting point. Calamus Reservoir, just north of town, is the real draw. Its expansive waters and submerged timber provide excellent habitat. Spring is prime time, as crappie move shallow to spawn. Look for them in the bays and near submerged structure. Fall is another excellent period as the fish feed heavily before winter. A local tip: Calamus State Recreation Area has multiple boat ramps, but the north side tends to be less crowded. Consider using a slip bobber rig with a minnow or jig to effectively target crappie around cover. The crappie in Calamus are known for their good size, so be prepared for some exciting fights! The variable water levels of the reservoir can affect fish location, so check the water level report before you go and adjust your tactics accordingly.
