Crappie fishing near Burwell centers around Calamus Reservoir. This lake offers ample habitat for crappie, including submerged timber, brush piles, and weed beds. Spring is undoubtedly the best time to target crappie, as they move into the shallows to spawn. Look for them in bays and coves with warmer water temperatures. Small jigs and minnows are the go-to baits, fished under a bobber or slow-trolled. The weed beds along the south shore can be particularly productive. As the water warms up in the summer, crappie tend to move deeper, so adjust your tactics accordingly. During the fall, they often return to shallower areas to feed before winter. The North Shore boat ramp provides good access to the lake. A fish finder can be helpful for locating schools of crappie. Keep an eye on water clarity, as crappie prefer slightly stained water.
