Crappie

Crappie fishing near Ogallala centers around Lake McConaughy and its associated waters. While not as renowned as some other crappie hotspots, McConaughy offers a decent population of both black and white crappie. Spring is prime time, as the fish move into shallow bays and coves to spawn. Target submerged brush piles, flooded timber, and docks with small jigs and minnows suspended under a bobber. In the summer, crappie move deeper, so try fishing around submerged structure in 10-20 feet of water. A great tip for McConaughy is to use your electronics to locate schools of crappie before you even cast a line. Public access is plentiful, but be prepared for wind, as it can pick up quickly on the open water. The crappie in McConaughy are generally good-sized, providing a worthwhile angling experience.
