While Bloomsbury itself might not be the first place that comes to mind for crappie fishing, several nearby ponds and lakes offer good opportunities. Check out Merrill Creek Reservoir, a short drive from Bloomsbury, for a shot at some slab-sized crappie. Spring, during the pre-spawn and spawn, is the prime time to target them. Look for crappie around submerged structures, brush piles, and weed beds in the shallower coves. Minnows and small jigs are the go-to baits. A boat is helpful for covering more water, but there are also some fishable areas from shore. Be sure to check the regulations for Merrill Creek regarding boating and fishing. The crappie population here can fluctuate, but when the conditions are right, you can find some real quality fish.
