Deal, New Jersey, might be better known for its beaches, but the freshwater ponds and reservoirs tucked away in Monmouth County offer surprisingly good crappie fishing. While not a trophy fishery, these waters provide consistent action, especially during the spring spawn (late April to early June) when crappie move into the shallows to nest. Look for them around submerged structure like fallen trees and docks in places like the Swimming River Reservoir or the smaller ponds within Monmouth County parks. Small jigs tipped with live minnows are the go-to bait. A local tip: many of these ponds have limited shoreline access. Consider renting a kayak or canoe for better access to prime crappie holding areas. Also, be sure to check the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife regulations for specific size and creel limits for each waterbody, as they can vary. The crappie here tend to run on the smaller side, averaging 8-10 inches, but the sheer numbers you can catch make for a fun day on the water.
