Crappie fishing around River Edge can be quite rewarding, particularly in the quiet backwaters and slower-moving sections of the Hackensack River and its tributaries. While the Hackensack itself can be a bit challenging due to current, look for connected ponds or impoundments. Spring is prime time, as the crappie move into shallower water to spawn. Small jigs tipped with minnows are deadly, fished under a bobber near structure like submerged trees or docks. Try exploring the Oradell Reservoir which is a short drive away and can hold good populations of crappie. Access to the reservoir requires a permit, so be sure to check local regulations before fishing. Early mornings and late afternoons are often the most productive times, especially on overcast days. The crappie here aren't usually huge, but they're plentiful and make for a tasty meal.
