If you're looking for slab-sized crappie in northern New Jersey, Roseland offers some under-the-radar opportunities. While not as well-known as some larger reservoirs, the smaller lakes and ponds in the area, particularly those connected to the Passaic River watershed, can hold surprisingly good populations. Spring is prime time, as the crappie move into the shallows to spawn. Focus on areas with submerged timber, brush piles, and lily pads. A small jig tipped with a minnow or a crappie nibble is deadly. Don't overlook the fall, either, as crappie school up again before winter. A local tip: Many of these ponds are accessible from the roadside, but be mindful of private property and parking restrictions. Also, water clarity can vary significantly, so bring a selection of lure colors to adapt to the conditions. The crappie in these smaller waters tend to be relatively unpressured, so even a simple presentation can be effective.
