If you're looking for some slab-sided crappie action, Batavia, New York, offers some surprisingly good freshwater opportunities. The Tonawanda Creek, which meanders through the area, is a prime spot to target these panfish. While not a trophy fishery, it's a great place to fill a stringer with decent-sized crappie, particularly around submerged timber and weed edges. Spring, during the pre-spawn and spawn, is undoubtedly the best time to fish, as the crappie move into shallower water. Fall can also be productive as they fatten up for winter. A small jig under a bobber is a classic and effective technique. Local Tip: Check water levels before heading out, as heavy rains can muddy the creek and impact fishing. Access is relatively easy at several points along the creek, including near the Batavia City Park, but be mindful of private property.
