If you're looking for a fantastic crappie destination in upstate New York, Lyons Falls offers some surprisingly good options. The Black River is the main draw, with its slower-moving sections and backwaters providing ideal habitat for crappie to thrive. Spring is prime time, right after ice-out when the crappie move into shallower areas to spawn. Look for them around submerged timber, fallen trees, and weed beds. Early morning and late evening are usually the most productive times. A small jig tipped with a minnow or crappie nibble is a classic and effective presentation. For bank access, check out the areas near the village park or along the less developed stretches of the river. Be aware that water levels on the Black River can fluctuate, so check conditions before you go. The crappie here aren't giants, but you can find good numbers of fish, making for an enjoyable day on the water.
