Croaker

Hatteras Island is a fantastic destination for croaker anglers, offering both inshore and nearshore opportunities. The Pamlico Sound is a particularly productive area, providing calmer waters and plenty of structure for croaker to thrive. The best time to target them is during the warmer months, from late spring to early fall. Look for them around grassy flats, oyster beds, and deeper channels within the Sound. Bloodworms, shrimp, and small pieces of cut bait are all effective. A local trick is to use a popping cork with a short leader and a small jig tipped with bait; this can entice croaker in shallower waters. Hatteras croaker are known for their aggressive strikes, making for exciting light-tackle fishing. They tend to be schooling fish, so if you find one, you're likely to find more. Public boat ramps and kayak launch sites are available around Hatteras, providing access to the Pamlico Sound. Be mindful of the wind, as it can pick up quickly in the Sound.
