Dungeness Crab

While not as renowned as areas further north, Dungeness crab can be found off Seal Beach, although in smaller numbers. Crabbing is typically best during the colder months, from late fall through early spring. Focus your efforts in deeper water, around 60-120 feet, near sandy or muddy bottoms. Use crab traps baited with fish carcasses or commercially available crab attractants. Setting your traps overnight can increase your chances of success. A useful tip is to launch from the Long Beach Marina and head towards the shipping lanes; this area often holds crab. Be mindful of boat traffic when setting and retrieving your traps. The Dungeness crab population here is not as abundant as in Northern California, so be prepared to put in some effort. Remember to check the current regulations regarding size limits, allowable gear, and the number of traps you can deploy.
