Dungeness Crab

Dungeness crab are a prized catch in the waters surrounding Astoria, and crabbing here can be a rewarding experience for both recreational and commercial crabbers. The lower Columbia River estuary and the nearshore ocean waters provide ample habitat for these crustaceans. The best time to crab is generally during the fall and winter months, after the molting season. Crab rings or pots baited with chicken, fish carcasses, or commercially prepared crab bait are the most common methods. When crabbing in the estuary, focus on areas with sandy or muddy bottoms. Be sure to check the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations for specific size and bag limits, as well as gear restrictions. A local tip: try setting your pots near the channel edges or in areas with eelgrass. Also, be aware of strong currents, which can move your gear. The Dungeness crab in this area are known for their large size and sweet, succulent meat.
