Flathead Catfish

Chasing flathead catfish near Clarkdale means focusing your efforts on the Verde River. This river system, while not widely known for trophy flatheads, does hold a population of these whiskered giants. The best time to target them is during the warmer months, from late spring through summer (May-September), when the water temperatures are higher and the catfish are more active. Fish after dark, as flatheads are primarily nocturnal predators. Live bait is key – bluegill or other small fish are highly effective. Target deep holes, submerged logs, and areas with heavy cover. Be prepared for a potentially long wait, as flathead fishing requires patience. Access to the river can be challenging, so research access points beforehand.
