White Bass

White bass fishing in the Clarkdale area is focused on the Verde River. While not as well-known as other white bass fisheries in the state, the Verde offers a chance at these schooling fish, particularly during their spring spawning run. Look for them to congregate near riffles and rocky areas as they move upstream to spawn, typically from late February through April. Small jigs, spinners, and crankbaits are effective lures. Concentrate your efforts in areas where the river narrows or where there are obvious current breaks. Access to the Verde River can be found at various points along Highway 89A, but be mindful of private property. The fishing is best when the river is clear and the water levels are stable. Check local conditions before you go, as heavy rains can quickly muddy the water and shut down the bite. A local tip: polarized sunglasses are essential for spotting schools of white bass and submerged structure.
