Flathead Catfish

Flathead catfish, the ambush predators of the catfish world, also call the Potomac River near Boonsboro home. Similar to blue catfish, they prefer deep water and areas with structure, but flatheads are more likely to be found hiding near submerged logs, rocks, and undercut banks. Live bait is king when targeting flatheads. Live bluegill or sunfish are highly effective, as these catfish are opportunistic feeders. Summer and early fall are the best times to target them, as they are most active during warmer water temperatures. Many anglers fish for them at night, when they are more likely to be on the prowl. A practical tip is to use a sturdy rod holder, as flathead catfish can deliver a powerful strike. Access to the Potomac is available via various public boat ramps and shoreline access points. The flathead catfish population in the Potomac River is healthy, with the potential to catch fish exceeding 40 pounds, making it a worthwhile pursuit for dedicated anglers.
