Flathead Catfish

Brookview, Maryland, offers some fantastic opportunities to tangle with flathead catfish, especially within the Nanticoke River system. These whiskered giants thrive in the deep, slow-moving waters of the river. The prime time for targeting flatheads is during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall. They are ambush predators, so focus your efforts on areas with plenty of cover, such as submerged logs, rock piles, and undercut banks. Live bait is the key to success when targeting flatheads. Bluegills, sunfish, and bullheads are all excellent choices. Fish them on heavy tackle with a strong hook and a sturdy rod and reel. A popular spot is the area around the Route 50 bridge, where there's plenty of deep water and structure. Be prepared for a battle – flatheads are incredibly strong fighters. The Nanticoke River flatheads are known for their impressive size, with fish exceeding 50 pounds not uncommon. Remember to handle these fish with care, as they are an important part of the ecosystem. Catch and release is encouraged for the larger specimens.
