Flathead Catfish

If you're after a true whiskerfish behemoth, Annona, Texas, offers some excellent flathead catfish opportunities. The Sulphur River, which meanders through the region, is your primary target. This river system is known for its abundant forage and slow-moving, snag-filled waters – prime habitat for flatheads. Spring and early summer, particularly after a good rain that raises the water level, are ideal times to target these ambush predators. They'll be moving into shallower areas to spawn. For bank access, try areas near bridge crossings along Highway 82. Use heavy tackle and live bait like sunfish or bullheads. Be prepared for a fight; these cats are strong! A local tip: scout the river during daylight to identify submerged logs and other structure where flatheads are likely holding. Be aware of snakes around the river.
