For flathead catfish near Bulverde, Texas, Canyon Lake and Medina Lake are your best bets. These whiskered giants prefer deep water and structure, so focus your efforts around submerged timber, creek channels, and rocky ledges. Live bait is the key to success when targeting flatheads. Large sunfish or perch are excellent choices. Night fishing is particularly productive, as flatheads are most active under the cover of darkness. Summer and early fall are prime times to target them. A heavy rod and reel are essential, as flatheads can grow to considerable sizes. Be patient and prepared for a long fight. Access to Canyon Lake is available through numerous public boat ramps.
