Flathead Catfish

Coldspring, Texas, and nearby Lake Livingston offer excellent opportunities for Flathead Catfish. This reservoir on the Trinity River holds some true giants. The best time to target Flatheads is during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall, with the peak often occurring during their spawning season. Live bait is key – think sunfish, perch, or even small bullheads. Focus your efforts around deep holes, submerged timber, and areas where the old Trinity River channel runs through the lake. Bank fishing is possible in some areas, but a boat is highly recommended to effectively target these fish. The public boat ramp near the Lake Livingston dam is a good starting point. Be prepared for a fight; Flatheads are known for their powerful runs and stubbornness. Check the TPWD regulations for size and bag limits, as they can change. A helpful tip: use a heavy-duty rod and reel combo with at least 50-pound test line.
