Flathead Catfish

If you're after a true whiskerfish behemoth, Hooks, Texas, is a sleeper cell for flathead catfish. The Red River, snaking along the Texas-Oklahoma border, is the primary draw. Its murky waters and abundant structure – think submerged timber, log jams, and deep holes – create ideal habitat for these ambush predators. Spring and early summer, after the spawn, are prime times as flatheads aggressively feed to regain energy. Another peak occurs in the fall as they fatten up for winter. For bank access, try areas near the Highway 82 bridge, but be prepared for thick vegetation. A boat gives you access to the best spots. A local tip: Live bait, particularly sunfish or bullheads, is king. Don't be afraid to use larger offerings; these fish are looking for a substantial meal. The flatheads in the Red River can reach impressive sizes, with fish over 50 pounds not uncommon, so be sure to bring heavy tackle!
