Hunting for a hefty Flathead Catfish near Humble? The East Fork of the San Jacinto River and Lake Houston are your primary destinations. The San Jacinto, with its slower-moving sections and abundant structure, provides ideal habitat for these ambush predators. Lake Houston, while larger, also holds flatheads, particularly in the river channels and around submerged timber. Live bait is paramount – think sunfish, bullheads, or even large shiners. Target these fish during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall, with nighttime being particularly productive. Access to the San Jacinto can be found along FM 1485, while Lake Houston offers numerous boat ramps. Keep in mind that the San Jacinto can be challenging to navigate due to shallow areas and debris. A local trick is to fish near downed trees and log jams, where flatheads lie in wait. Patience is key; these fish are often slow to take the bait.
