Flathead Catfish

If you're after a true whiskered behemoth, Irving, Texas, offers surprisingly good flathead catfish opportunities. The Elm Fork of the Trinity River, which winds its way through the city, is your primary target. These fish lurk in the deeper holes and around submerged timber, waiting to ambush prey. Spring and early summer, particularly after a good rain that raises the water level, are prime times. As the water warms, they become more active and aggressive. Live bait is key – think sunfish or bullheads. For bank access, try near the bridges along Valley View Lane or exploring the greenbelt areas. Be aware that the river can fluctuate significantly, so check conditions before heading out. Remember that flatheads are masters of camouflage, so fish your bait tight to cover and be patient; a big one can take a while to find but is well worth the effort!
