Flathead Catfish

La Ward, Texas, might not be the first place that comes to mind for trophy flathead catfish, but the Lavaca River and its surrounding waterways hold some impressive specimens. These whiskered giants thrive in the deep holes and log jams, especially during the warmer months. The prime time to target flatheads here is from late spring through early fall (May-October). Live bait is key – think perch, bluegill, or even small bullheads. Fish them on a Carolina rig or a three-way swivel rig near structure. A good access point is the public boat ramp on the Lavaca River just south of town. Be prepared for a fight; these fish are strong and tenacious. The flatheads in this area are known for their predatory nature and can reach impressive sizes, so heavy tackle is a must. Night fishing is particularly productive, as flatheads are most active under the cover of darkness.
