Flathead Catfish

For flathead catfish angling close to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, Mesquite presents some under-the-radar options. While the city itself doesn't have a major river running through it, several smaller creeks and reservoirs in the surrounding area hold flatheads. Look to areas with submerged timber or rocky structure, especially where these waterways converge or flow into larger bodies of water. Summer nights are your best bet; flatheads are ambush predators and become more active under the cover of darkness. A key to success is using live bait – sunfish or bullheads are proven producers. Be prepared for some heavy lifting; while trophy fish aren't common, flatheads in the 10-20 pound range are definitely possible. Access can be a challenge; research public access points and be prepared to do some walking. Remember to check local regulations regarding baitfish and size limits before heading out.
