Flathead Catfish

If you're after a true Texas-sized flathead catfish, Round Mountain offers some excellent opportunities. The Colorado River, as it winds through this part of the Hill Country, holds some real lunkers. Look for deep holes near structure like submerged timber or rock ledges – these are prime ambush points for flatheads. Spring and early summer, when the river is flowing well and the water is warming up, are generally the best times to target them, as they'll be actively feeding before and after spawning. Live bait is king here; large sunfish or perch are hard for a flathead to resist. Be prepared for a fight – these fish are strong! Access can be a bit tricky in some areas; look for county road crossings or public parks that provide river access. Remember that river levels can fluctuate rapidly, so check conditions before you go.
