Flathead Catfish

For flathead catfish enthusiasts, Sherman, Texas, and the surrounding Lake Texoma area offer a rewarding experience. While Texoma is more famous for blues, it holds a healthy population of flatheads that can reach impressive sizes. The key to targeting flatheads here is live bait – think sunfish, perch, or small carp. Focus your efforts on areas with heavy cover, such as submerged timber, creek channels, and rocky structures. Night fishing is particularly effective, as flatheads are ambush predators that become more active after dark. The warmer months (May-September) are generally the best time to target them. A practical tip is to use a heavy-duty rod and reel setup, as flatheads are incredibly strong. Several boat ramps provide access to the lake, but be mindful of shallow water and submerged hazards, especially in the upper reaches of the lake. Look for areas where creeks enter the main lake; these can be flathead hotspots.
