Flounder
Ocala anglers looking for flounder will need to head to the coast, but the drive is well worth it. Both the Gulf and Atlantic coasts offer excellent flounder fishing. Focus your efforts in areas with sandy or muddy bottoms near structure, such as docks, bridges, and oyster bars. These flatfish are ambush predators, lying in wait for unsuspecting prey. Spring and fall are prime times, as flounder migrate inshore to spawn. A popular technique is to slowly drag a jig head tipped with a shrimp or mud minnow along the bottom. The Crystal River area on the Gulf coast provides numerous inshore flats and channels ideal for targeting flounder. A good tip is to fish during periods of slack tide, as this allows your bait to stay on the bottom more effectively. Remember to use a sharp hook and set the hook quickly when you feel a bite, as flounder are notorious for spitting out baits.
