Grunt
Don't underestimate the humble grunt when fishing in Destin, Florida! While they might not be the trophy fish everyone chases, grunts are plentiful, tasty, and provide consistent action, especially for families and newer anglers. Destin's proximity to the Gulf of Mexico means easy access to numerous artificial reefs and natural bottom structures where grunts congregate. Spring and summer are prime times, as the water warms and grunts become more active. A great tip for Destin anglers is to fish around the many public artificial reefs within a few miles of shore. These reefs are easily accessible by small boat or even kayak on calm days. Simple bottom fishing rigs with small hooks baited with squid or shrimp are extremely effective. Grunts are schooling fish, so if you catch one, there are likely more nearby. Remember to check size and bag limits, although they are generally generous. Also, be aware that Destin can get crowded, so consider fishing during the week or early in the morning to avoid the heaviest boat traffic. Grunts are a fantastic way to introduce someone to the joys of saltwater fishing!
