Grunt
Looking for consistent action in the waters around Key West? Target grunts! These abundant fish offer a reliable bite and are a great way to enjoy a day on the water, especially for families or those new to saltwater fishing. Key West's unique ecosystem, with its shallow flats, mangrove islands, and nearby reefs, provides ideal habitat for a variety of grunt species, including the white grunt, the most common. Year-round fishing is possible, but the warmer months, from spring through fall, are generally the most productive. For a local tip, try fishing around the numerous patch reefs that dot the waters surrounding the island. These smaller reefs are often overlooked but can hold impressive numbers of grunts. A simple bottom rig with a small hook baited with shrimp or squid is all you need. Anchor up-current of the reef and let your bait drift back into the structure. Be mindful of the delicate coral ecosystem and avoid anchoring directly on the reef. Also, consider using a chum bag to attract fish to your location. Grunts are a fun and accessible way to experience the vibrant fishery of Key West.
